This Ape's For You

I have been at work for so long I don't know what day it is. So I've invented a new day, called wear your favorite colors when you were 7. In my case those colors were lavender and green. While green remains a favorite, I have eschewed lavender for most of my adult life. Until, that is, this past Sunday when I saw this shirt on the rack at Goodwill and fell deeply in love. It is a good thing I live in Connecticut where woman/shirt love is legal.

Back to Basics

Some days you just don't want to bother with anything more than a simple black dress and some cute sandals. Eagle-eyed readers may notice that this is practically the same outfit as seen here. Just in black. Hey if it works it works, and even if it doesn't I'll probably wear it anyway.

Suits

I spent most this past weekend in the office preparing for a hearing this morning and am so tired that this post may lack some coherency. I did take an hour to walk over to Goodwill where I found this suit for $12. Although it is not something I would typically buy - I jumped at the chance at having something to wear this morning that would not require me to shave my legs. So, um, here's what I am wearing today. Off to prepare my exhibits for court....

Blue Friday

Not much time to post today. My boobs continue their quest for sunlight while the rest of me is in danger of suffocating under a pile of papers.

Human Phototropism

It is a cloudy day but as you can see from this photo my boobs are apparently phototropic and are doing their best to reach for the sun. Seriously - this has got to be in the top five most awkward poses I have ever posted here. The only good thing about this photo is the fact I was able to adjust the color enough to disguise the fact that my blue bra is very visible under this shirt. Kind of makes you wonder why I did not just stay in bed today.

Matilda of the Jungle

When I was in college and fancied myself a photographer, I took a lot of photographs of "junk", old gasoline cans, broken violins, etc. So posing in front of these dumpsters made me feel right at home.

The Dress Dilemma

I like dresses because they are so easy to wear - one step and you are done (unless you need to leave the house and then shoes are usually advisable). However, if you crave visual variety like I do, dresses can feel a little limited. Which is, perhaps, why I have so many dresses that don't get worn a lot. Including this cute number which has only left the house on one other occasion.

Does anyone else have this "problem"? How do you deal with it?

Green Monday

Things are a bit hectic in stufffast land but I took a quick break to snap a shot of my cute green blazer. It is doing its best to cheer up this tired white t-shirt that I literally slept in last night.

The Red Coats Are Coming!

I have wanted a red trench coat ever since I missed out on the cute one Target was selling a few months ago. So imagine my excitement when I found this baby on clearance a few weeks ago. It retailed for $398 and I picked it up for $100, which is way more than I typically spend but I reason it is a classic piece I'll have for years.

Lurking underneath is a simple but (I think) flattering t-shirt.

New Photo Nook? New Dress!

I have worked at my current building for a little over two years. Today is the first time I ever noticed we have a little courtyard next to our building. In my defense, this courtyard is hidden between a bunch of dumpsters and a creepy cat sculpture. It also provides a wee bit of privacy for taking photos. I managed to take three photos before I realized I was being watched by three guys who work in the first ground floor office.

In other news, check out my new dress. It is one of the Thakoon for Target re-releases that I managed to completely miss when it came out this year. A few weeks ago I found one on clearance and bought it even though it was too big. Fate smiled on me the next day by having a second one in my size* show up! So I returned the too big dress and now have a new dress.

* honestly I really don't know if this is my size. It seems to fit but is also very short. mr. deathstar said it looked "fine" (which in mr. deathstar speak is one notch above "okay") but he was half-asleep when I asked. Since I will be spending the day buried under a three foot pile of paper - no one is likely to notice if mr. deathstar and I are wrong.

Fistfull of Fashion

I have GOT to start taking more than one photograph in the morning. Seriously - what does this pose say about me besides "unresolved anger issues"? Awkward pose notwithstanding, I am in love with this outfit. This skirt is soooo comfortable (I think it may have been intended to be used for some sport). This blouse is also comfortable, although it is too small so I need to have perfect posture or else it gaps in front.

Everybody Everywear - Lace Edition

I have wanted an aqua colored skirt since I saw Diane Von Furstenberg's pre-fall collection (warning viewing link may result in a desire to sell a kidney in order to buy the whole collection). When I first saw this skirt at Goodwill I rejected it because, although the color was perfect, it has pleats which tend to be unflattering and the label said it was a size 12). Believe it or not I rejected it on three separate occasions before I decided to take a chance and try it on.

Not only did it fit perfectly but it also did not do the unflattering things to my hips that most pleated skirts do (I'm talking to YOU Gap black pleated skirt that I never wear). Best of all - it was $3.00.

On reflection the skirt is a little schoolgirl/young for me, but when I have ever let age inappropriateness stop me? The skirt also gave me a chance to try out the navy/aqua color combination I've been obsessing over ever since I saw this fab blogger's post. Conveniently, one of my navy shirts is also lace which makes it perfect for today's EBEW link celebration.

Close up of the lace detail.

Things I Never Thought I'd Say

.... I need to buy a black skirt! The two black skirts I own, this one and this one,are both too big. I didn't think it was so noticeable with this one but based on this photo I realize I was wrong. At least my shoes are cute.

Good Advice Unheeded

When you graduate law school "they" warn you to always keep a suit in your office so that you are prepared if you are suddenly called into court. Very good advice, which, of course, I have failed to adhere to. So this morning I will be at court, covering for my boss, wearing this dress. Although it could be worse, it could be better. Although it is not court appropriate, this is a cute a dress. I got it on clearance months ago and it finally fits.

When I was thinking about wearing it today, I thought it was much longer which would allow me to skip shaving my legs. Clearly, I was wrong but I still didn't shave. Hope the mediator likes hairy girls! This dress is a lot more flattering than this photo suggests. I only had time for one crappy photo. I may re-shoot later so you can see the pretty sleeve details.

Chhhhanges

Yesterday I started playing around with different blogger templates. I'm still not entirely happy with this one but I like it better than the last two. To celebrate the change I am treating you all to a new background - the lobby of my office building! Sexy - not. If I ever get a tripod, I will take more photos of the outside of my building which is actually sort of interesting. But until then you're stuck with stuff like this. It is expected to be 99 degrees today - perfect day to have to be in court in a suit - not. (Look two "not" jokes in one post, just call me Borat).

Wear It 6/8/2011

Today was a hard day to dress for. It is very hot outside, very cold inside, and I have a meeting with very conservative people all afternoon. Not entirely sure if this fits the bill (I have a black matte jersey "blazer" to put on for the meeting) but I think it is okay. I know my legs look so pale and chubby in this picture but this was another one of those - one shot, five minutes to post mornings. I guess the heat must be getting to people because my workload has tripled this week! Off to do some work....

Old Jewelry Holder

New Jewelry Holder by matilda deathstar
New Jewelry Holder, a photo by matilda deathstar on Flickr.

The great blouse adventure

I am on the fence about this blouse. I first saw it on someone in the wardrobe re-mix group on Flickr months ago and when I saw the owner had purchased it for $5, I became obsessed with finding it. As is often the case with Old Navy, the shirt was on-line but at full price. My local stores did not have it. I had just about given up when I found myself going to court in a town an hour away that happens to be near a large mall and I found the shirt!

You may recall I wore it once before when I was litigating a barn raising in February. Since then it has sat in the closet, playing second fiddle to other black pattered tops. What do you think? Keep or donate?

Also, although it looks like I spent 10 hours in a tanning bed between yesterday and today - my skin color is merely the result of photo editing software.

The case of the mutilcolored skirt

I got this Betsy Johnson skirt at Goodwill (natch) a few months ago, but have been puzzled as to how to style it. Then I found this great blazer in my closet and it all came together, sort of. Honestly I'm not in love with the pink tank and wish I had something darker. But, as mr. deathstar would say, you get dressed with the closet you have, not the closet you want.

Taking Good Advice

I bought this dress on the advice of Anjali, who has a most covetable wardrobe (seriously, check her blog it is awesome).

So far I have not garnered as many compliments as she did, but I have only seen two people today. I'll keep you posted.

My only regrets are: I should have taken Anjali's advice and bought a medium not a small, the skirt looks better a little fuller and I wish I had selected different shoes - I think the dress looks cuter floor length.

Otherwise this is pretty much the most comfortable thing I've worn in a long time. If you have $17.50 to burn, I highly recommend investing in this dress.

Thrifted Thursday

I guess animal prints must be "out" because I keep finding awesome items at Goodwill, such as this J. Crew shirt. The shirt and pants (also thrifted) cost less than $15. Throw in the shoes (on sale for $30), and $1 necklace from the consignment store and the belt I've had since the 90's and you have a pretty cost effective outfit.

Not quitting my day job

Did you know that most fashion bloggers take more than one photo of their outfits and actually put time and effort into editing their photos? It's true - I read it on the internet.

It is with this in mind that I am forced to conclude I will probably never be a fashion blogger. Need proof - I give you exhibit A.
