Lost a Lawyer to Her Clothes

Fridays are not a typical court day for me, but the court scheduled a conference for today and here I am stuck in a suit for the day. A smarter person might have brought some jeans to change into later, but, as I have demonstrated on numerous occasions, foresight is not one of my stronger skills. A smarter person might also have chosen a career that did not involve getting up so early and that didn't involve wearing so many suits.

Easy

After yesterday's tragic wardrobe struggle, getting dressed this morning was a breeze. Because I was not limited to separates (no doctor's visits today!) I was able to throw on this adorable dress, some boots* and was done. I even had time to throw on a necklace.

* I should have take the time to put on socks under the boots, a situation I may need to rectify later.

Red White and Dull

This morning I stepped into my overstuffed closet and I had nothing to wear*. My problem was compounded when I committed myself to these pants (which are great but apparently not as versatile as I thought). After deliberating for an absurdly long time I grabbed this shirt and headed for the door.

Contrast

Yesterday I didn't have time to blog my outfit but you did not miss much (very conservative black dress with matching blazer). I wanted to wear something more fun today and was pleasantly surprised to find this dress in the mail last night. My friend M had ordered it from Target before everything sold out but it was too big for her. She generously offered it to me and I (cementing my title as official Missoni for Target Whore) jumped at it. I actually tried to pair the dress with a more conservative solid sweater but this one worked best. The dress is clearly short and I suspect in the future I will pair it with leggings or tights so I can bend over during the day.

Is That a Duck In Your Bra Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

Although I am happy to see you, I do have a duck shaped ice pack in my bra which is why my dress is bunched funny in the chest area.

Jacket: BCBG
Tights: Spanx
Boots: Gap (I know I swore off black ankle boots but these were so cute and on sale and I just couldn't resist)

Back at Work

On Tuesday I had some (minor) surgery and spent yesterday recovering in clothing not fit for blogging. I wish I had had the foresight to take off the whole week but since I didn't, I'm stuck at work debating whether the proscription against signing legal documents while on Vicodin applies only when one is a client or extends to when one is a lawyer (If you are potential client I am joking - there is no law against being high while acting as lawyer :)

In other news - my Missoni for Target order arrived. I got 2 sweaters and 2 shirts. LOVE the sweaters and am on the fence about the shirts.

Getting My '70s On

Channeling Kelly Garrett today with a knit plaid skirt, black pull on boots and a black v-neck sweater. All that is missing is feathered hair and an orange Pinto*.

Sweater: Banana Republic (old)
Skirt: St. John via Goodwill
Boots: Clarks

* I am acutely aware that Sabrina drove the Pinto on the show and Kelly was stuck in that awful Mustang. But this is my fantasy life and I want the orange Pinto.

Unearthed Treasures

I made an effort last weekend to try to prepare my closet for fall.  I did not get very far, but I did find a bunch of belts that I thought I had given away, including this Linea Pelle belt that I snagged at Century 21 a few years ago.  It is a bit big but works worn in a knot.  I also found these cute Taryn Rose boots that I was not able to wear when my calves were heavier.

Is the Dress Black or Are the Windows Painted?

Today marks the first day this week where I do not have to go to the doctor's office and I am celebrating by wearing a dress.  I snagged this dress on super sale at J. Crew and I'm happy I did.  Although I certainly have plenty of black dresses, I liked the military details and casual vibe of this one.  Plus the long sleeves hide the bruises on my arms from all the bloodwork I've had.

Lean On Me

What is up with this pose? My left armpit is full of Novocaine and some of it must have leaked out and numbed the portion of my brain that is in charge of discriminating between good and stupid photos to post on the internet.

Although you may be distracted by my odd pose*, note I have paired brown animal print shoes with a grey blazer. I was inspired by this photo and plan to do more of it this fall.

Foiled Intentions

This morning I woke up all excited about the Missoni for Target launch and had the brilliant idea of going to Target before work to get something to wear today. Since I planned to change I just threw on whatever was handy and went to Target. I arrived at 8:25 (they opened at 8) and.... there was nothing left. Not a stitch on the racks (although a woman who had a full cart did let me try on some items for size). And thus I was left to face the day looking like I was dressed by a 5 year old.

In hindsight it occurs to me that Target sells other clothing that I could have purchased but this did not occur to me until about 5pm. Can you believe I have a college degree?

So the lesson of the day is don't get dressed assuming you will soon score some cheap Missoni because it may not happen.

Dressed for comfort and speed

As much as I love this shirt, I fear it may be just a wee bit too big (until showing your bra becomes the next big fashion trend). However it was the perfect thing to wear today because 1. the sleeves conceal and do not irritate the large lump on my arm from where I got the flu shot and 2. I can take it off easily which will come in handy for my doctor's visit later today. Similarly, these pants are a little big/stretched out but are also easy to pull on and off.

Shopping My Closet

Last night I was browsing through the pages of a fashion magazine and started obsessing on selling my kidneys so I could buy a dress (or ten) from the Miu Miu Fall collection. Happily, before I could find a knife and perform some surgery, I remembered I had this dress in my closet. Although not as awesome as my designer obsessions, it is a very cute dress (especially since it now fits better than the last time I wore it).

Lesson - before you sell an organ or take out a second mortgage, take a look in your closet. Who knows what you will find.

In 1000 years blog archeologists will see this post and wonder why on earth I bothered to post this outfit. I have no answer other than force of habit.

Frumpy Edge? Edgy Frump?

Every so often I get frustrated by how ubiquitous fashion can be - especially when your budget limits you to mainstream stores instead of couture :) One way to stand out (for good or bad) is to pair unusual items such as this jacket with more mainstream items such as these basic J. Crew cords. I found this jacket in the clearance aisle at Burlington Coat Factory. It was apparently part of 3 piece suit but only the jacket was left. Although it is two sizes too large and a bit frumpy, I loved the color and decided that for $7 I would take a risk and see if I could make it work.

What do you think? Did I succeed or am I getting aufed this week for my frumpy taste?

Easing in to Fall

Although this shirt has a rather "summery" print, I paired it with a light jacket and suede shoes to give it a fall vibe. I think it works.
